What I see from the breaking news of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stepping down and leaving the company

The cover picture is from Fortune.

Just a few hours ago, OpenAI announced that Mira Murati, CTO of OpenAI, will take over Sam Altman as interim CEO for the company. The announcement attributes Mira’s experience in Al governance and policy essential to her new role, in addition to her understanding of the company’s values, operations, and business, and already leading the company’s research, product, and safety functions.

Last week on Nov. 15, 2023, Andrew Ng, Founder of Coursera and deeplearning.ai and professor of Stanford as well, spoke at the World Economic Forum (WEF) and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings in San Francisco, about AI, according. to his message in newsletter “The Batch”. He mentioned that regulating Al is a hot topic right now in the United States and European Union in the news letter. Andrew has delivered this simple message in WEF and APEC: “Governments should not outlaw open source software or pass regulations that stifle open source development.”

Satya Nadella, chairman and CEO of Microsoft, proposed carbon neutral and data safety and security solution leveraging confidential computing technology partnered with Nvidia, in the keynote speech of Microsoft Ignite 2023 developer conference on Nov. 15, 2023. Mr. Nadella also announced new services with open source in Azure, such as letting user conduct model training and inference in their local PC with SLM (Small Language Model) and MaaS (Models as a Service) with Llama 2 partnered with Meta.

Lastly, let’s take a look at the reactions on stepping down of Sam Altman from key stack holders of OpenAI or people deeply involved in generative AI industry., as of 11:49am Nov. 18, 2023 Tokyo time JST. All these comments are from X (former Twitter).

Satya Nadella @satyanadella

“As you saw at Microsoft Ignite this week, we’re continuing to rapidly innovate for this era of Al, with over 100 announcements across the full tech stack – from Al systems, models, and tools in Azure, to Copilot. Most importantly, we’re committed to delivering all of this to our customers while building for the future. We have a long-term agreement with OpenAl with full access to everything we need to deliver on our innovation agenda and an exciting product roadmap; and remain committed to our partnership, and to Mira and the team.

Together, we will continue to deliver the meaningful benefits of this technology to the world.”

Andrew Ng @AndrewYNg

“Sending love to everyone at OpenAl. Whatever happens next, many of us are wishing the best for all of you and for the amazing company you’ve built.”

Elon Musk @Elon Musk

Still no comments (no mention at all!)

Eric Schmidt @ericschmidt

Former CEO of Google

“Sam Altman is a hero of mine. He built a company from nothing to $90 Billion in value, and changed our collective world forever. I can’t wait to see what he does next. I, and billions of people, will benefit from his future work- it’s going to be simply incredible. Thank you @sama for all you have done for all of us.”
